A unique opportunity has now become available for an experienced Policy Advisor to join our dynamic team to contribute to policy and advocacy in mental health.

 

The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), the principal organisation representing the medical speciality of psychiatry in Australia and New Zealand, is seeking a Policy Advisor to join the Practice, Policy and Partnerships department. 

 

The Policy Advisor will provide high-level policy advice and complex policy analysis to the Policy, Practice and Partnerships (PPP) Department and RANZCP committees through contributing to the development of RANZCP policy, guidelines, submissions, and position statements on matters relevant to psychiatric practice and improving mental health for the community.

 

This role has a specific focus to:

  • Contribute to the development and strengthening of policy approaches across the College through identification and prioritisation of key policy issues and opportunities to proactively influence mental health planning, policy, systems, and delivery of care.
  • Produce written and oral policy briefs, including recommendations for committees, based on review and analysis of complex information, member consultation, and other information sources.
  • Conduct and present high-level research in mental health policy, health systems and regulations, relevant to RANZCP policy development across a range of topic areas.
  • Lead development, drafting, and periodical review of RANZCP position statements, policies, and guidelines.
  • Assist other committees, e.g. Faculties and Sections, with policy development, regulatory changes, and submissions.
  • Summarise and present complex information, achieve consensus of views, and draft influential responses to consultations, inquiries, and other correspondence for government and other key stakeholders.
  • Apply innovative methodologies to gather evidence and propose solutions for RANZCP policy responses, submissions, fact sheets, discussion papers, and reports.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Excellent knowledge & skill in the provision of complex policy advice, with specific expertise in health and/or social arenas, and at least 3 years' experience in a similar role. Experience in health, ideally in mental health, is desirable.
  • Relevant tertiary and post-graduate qualifications in an appropriate health, social science, political science business/legal, or other relevant disciplines.
  • Ability to work with committee chairs and members to support the strategic prioritisation, planning, delivery, and evaluation of policy objectives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to grasp new concepts, absorb and analyse complex information, gain consensus, formulate recommendations and produce timely and succinct correspondence, statements, submissions, briefing papers, and reports.
  • Knowledge of and ability to apply research and advanced theory to policy development, including levels of evidence, systematic evidence review, and international and jurisdictional benchmarking.
  • Ability to apply sound theoretical knowledge of policy levers such as funding models, legislation, regulatory standards, and indicators.
  • Excellent planning, organisational and time management skills, and the ability to establish priorities, manage specific projects and meet deadlines, working both independently and as part of a team.
