 A unique opportunity has now become available for an experienced Policy Officer to join a small and dynamic team to contribute to policy and advocacy in mental health.


The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), the principal organisation representing the medical speciality of psychiatry in Australia and New Zealand, is seeking a Policy Officer to join the Practice, Policy and Partnerships department. 


The primary objective is to coordinate and prepare RANZCP policies and submissions that are relevant to the practice of psychiatry and mental health in Australia and New Zealand.

The position offers diverse and interesting work with career development opportunities and supports the RANZCP to contribute to policy for effective and sustainable practice, and improve mental health outcomes across Australia and New Zealand.


The successful applicant will have relevant tertiary qualifications and will demonstrate:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in policy development and analysis with specific expertise in health and social arenas.
  • Understanding and experience in a membership or not for profit medical organisation or the ability to quickly adapt to a complex, committee-based organisational structure.
  •  Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of government structures and processes.
  •  Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the health care system.
  • Sound quantitative and qualitative research skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to use research outcomes to formulate recommendations and implement decisions.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, able to tailor style to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to grasp new concepts/absorb and analyse large amounts of information on complex topics and produce succinct reports and briefing papers.
  • Demonstrated ability to utilise time efficiently by prioritising a broad range of tasks and focusing on key issues
  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative and progress work with limited supervision, in line with team objectives and priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to take responsibility for a diverse, deadlines-focused workload.
  • Strong organisational skills and the capacity to ensure committee work plans and outstanding actions are addressed within required timelines.
  • Ability to work effectively with committees made up of expert members; consumer, carer and community representatives.
