The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), the principal organisation representing the medical specialty of Psychiatry in Australia and New Zealand, is seeking an experienced and professional Policy Officer to join our expanding Policy team.


Supported by our Policy Manager, this position will assist the RANZCP Victorian Branch to continue to build its reputation as the leading voice in psychiatry and mental health in Victoria. The Policy Officer will work closely with the Policy Advisor, Policy Manager, and the Victorian Branch Committee Chair to develop policy positions and associated advocacy campaigns.


The roles have a specific focus to:

  • Support consultation with the RANZCP Victorian Branch Committee, Branch Chair and Policy and Advocacy Advisor to build policy positions, in particular the reform process associated with the recent Royal Commission into Victoria’s Mental Health System.
  • Prepare responses/submissions to the Victorian government and other relevant processes/inquiries (mental health cuts across a wide variety of policy areas and opportunities to contribute are broad).
  • Prepare briefing materials and provide policy support to the RANZCP Victorian Branch Chair and members who represent the RANZCP Victorian Branch at meetings with external stakeholders.
  • Provide policy support to the RANZCP’s communications team and assist with media inquiries as required.

  • Manage a workplan and liaise closely with colleagues across Branches and the bi-national policy team.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience in policy development, government structures and processes.
  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in an appropriate Health, Social Science, Education, Business or Research discipline.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, which are able to be tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to work effectively with committees made up of expert clinicians and people with lived experience of mental illness (consumers and carers) to build effective working relationships and work within a small team in line with team objectives and priorities.
  • Capacity to build effective working relationships via teleconferences, videoconferences, email, and formal face to face meetings.
