The Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP), the principal organisation representing the medical specialty of psychiatry in Australia and New Zealand is seeking a Manager of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Mental Health to lead the cultural planning for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander membership and staff. This is an identified position. 

 

This position is a newly created role that will work to implement the RANZCP’s commitment to the provision of culturally appropriate and accessible psychiatric care by and for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

 

Key responsibilities: 

  • Supervise and provide leadership for the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Liaison Officer position.
  • Foster relationships with key internal and external stakeholders including but not limited to the Australian Indigenous Doctors’ Association (AIDA), Leaders in Indigenous Medical Education (LIME) Network, and the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Mental Health Committee.
  • Maintain membership of the AIDA Specialist Trainee Support Program Cross College Project Group by attending and participating in meetings.
  • Work collaboratively with other staff, Committees, members and key external stakeholders to progress actions from the Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Mental Health Committee and the AIDA Specialist Trainee Support Program Cross College Project Group.
  • Support of The Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Working Group (RWG) to enable the development of the RANZCP Innovate RAP (and subsequent Plans as the RANZCP determines).
  • Provide routine and ad hoc advice to Committees and staff as requested regarding the appropriate representation, consideration and inclusion of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people and their
  • Establish connections and work with National and State-based Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHO’s), and by extension Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations (ACCO’s) (non-government organisations and local communities) to establish equal partnerships for the purpose of working collaboratively.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Knowledge and or lived experience on the issues impacting the provision of healthcare for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Peoples and health professionals.
  • Knowledge and or lived experience around the social determinates of health impacting on Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Strong communication skills both spoken and written, with the ability to adapt communication styles depending on the setting.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent work experience in management within health, public health, policy, or other relevant area.
  • Demonstrated experience in effective development and leadership of engagement programs with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples.
  • Proven project management skills and experience. 
  • Eligibility Requirement: Applicants must be either an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or a New Zealand citizen.
